As breeders and dog owners we have all have to face the battle of what dogs or treats we feed
our loved pets. Seems pretty simple right. We walk up and down the dog food department
and look for what we think and hope is the best quality food for our pets. We have had to deal
with dog food recalls and some of us have suffered the loss of our loved pet due to tainted
foods which the Recalls came to late to prevent damage or death to our pets. Faced with this
is now time for us to take control of what our dogs eat and which treats we give to them.
Please do your research. Look at what ingredients are in the foods you buy. Just how much
real meat ( which scrap meat not for human consumption ) is in it or is it just ground meat
substitute or by-products. What food flavors, additives or color dyes that are added. Some
foods are too high in protein for your dogs needs and other are very lacking. Feel like your
back is up against the wall yet...been there and fully understand it.  Canines are meat
eaters...by nature. They need other things in their diet to assure they are getting a well
balanced diet. Finding a good dog food which you like can be the base for your dog diet and
you can help by adding good healthy foods to their diet as well.
Whole grain or white rice mixed with a small amount of chicken, pork or fish adds a good
diversity to your dogs meal. You can add half dry dog food and half rice mixture mixed well to
your dogs daily diet. Your dogs diet should never be more then 10% dogs treat per day.
Never give your dogs sweets, chocolate or sugar. It is not good for their health or teeth. They
do not brake down table scrapes into energy and burn it off, which then turns to fat and
builds up bacteria in their mouth.
I can't tell you how many times I have seen the gourmet or holiday doggy treats. A must
have we think. Then weigh out the cost and the amount of sugar...just back away.... Or to
watch the older couples weighting out the option of the small package while high priced dog
treats for their dogs. At some point we have to say enough is enough...Even in our world we
were pulled into the prepared unhealthy fast foods that we think make our days easier...at
that moment we don't count the cost to our health, vet or doctors visit or the hard effect we
deal with to undo the lives of bad living or fight to rid the unwanted pounds. So here are some
things to try. Some dogs may like one and hate another...you won't know till you try them...

recipes and treats for you try.
Here is one of mine that my dogs love....
Peanut Butter and or Oatmeal Treats....
1 1/8 cup of whole wheat flour
1 1/8 cup of unbleached white flour
( If you add 1/2 cup of instance uncooked oatmeal only use 1 cup
each of the flours )
1/2 cup of peanut butter
2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
1 cup water.  ( If you want meat flavor treats, don't add peanut butter or oatmeal.
Instead of one cup of water use one cup of beef or chicken broth. )

You can add seeds, dry fruit or honey.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Blend wheat flour & white flour into one bowl. Set aside
Combine vegetable oil, peanut butter ad water into a large bowl, mix well.
With a large spoon fold in one half of dry mixture into the bowl slowly and then add the
remainder forming a dough ball. You will need to knead the mixture by hand on a
sheet of wax paper. Kneading the dough well will assure the mixture is well combined.
Roll into a ball and let stand on the wax paper for 10 minutes to allow the gluten to
relax. Makes for easier rolling.

Use rolling pen to roll dough out about 1/4 inch thick. Cut with small cookie cutters or
pizza cutter. The amount of treats will depend on how large a cutter you use. The size
of the cutter depends on how large a treat your dogs needs are. Score the tops of the
cookies with a fork to allow the steam that builds up inside to release.

You can buy small cutters at bakery departments or order them online. You can also
us large cutters to cut the cookie and then cut the cookie in smaller parts. Please do
not use icing or sprinkles to add looks to your treats. Our goal is making better treats.

Bake on an un-greased coolie sheet for about 25 to 30 minutes or until they lightly
brown and hard to touch in the center of the cookie.
Cool and then store in jar or zip lock bag. This treat does not have to be refrigerated.

                                 Wheat Free Dog Treat Recipe
Wheat Free Salmon Treats
• 1 8 oz. can salmon with juice
• 1/2 cup chopped parsley
• 3 eggs, shells included
• 1/2 cup sesame seeds ground up in coffee grinder
• 1/2 cup flax seeds ground up in coffee grinder
• 2-3 cups potato flour
Put these ingredients into a food processor, mix VERY WELL. Pour potato flour
through the opening while the motor is running. I can't tell you exactly how much, but
I would guess about 2-3 cups. When the dough forms, like a pie curst, and rolls into a
ball it is ready to take out.
Dump this mess onto potato floured counter or board. Knead more flour into this and
when it is a rolled out cookie consistency, it is ready to roll out into about 14 inch thick.
I use a pizza cutter to roll our long strips and then cut crosswise to make small
squares. If you want fancy you may use a cookie cutter. Bake on cookie sheets,
sprayed Pam or line the sheet with parchment paper. I put in as many as will fit.
Usually two whole cookie sheets suffices. I bake this in a 375º oven for 20 min. Turn
and rotate the cookie sheets and bake about 10 more minutes. For crispier treats, try
baking at 275º for 45 minutes (or until crunchy).

                                     Half and half meal mixture

I buy box rice which has three boiling bags each inside. I take one bag instance three
minute white or brown rice. Boil the rice, drain and set aside. You can also add some
chicken or beef broth to the boiling water for taste.

To this you can add either:
a. One can white or dark chicken or can tuna or cooked liver pieces, or boiled chicken
parts, broiled pork chop or de-boned fish.

This makes a moist dog food mixture to add to dry food. Moist mixture must be refrigerated
and can be frozen.

Take the amount of food per feeding and use half the amount of wet mixture of rice and the
other half with dry dog food.
